A great illustration showing how Varroa Mites work their damage within the honey bee colonies. The mites feed on the hemolymph or fluids of the honey bee larva and reproduce within the brood nest. Colonies that are Varroa Sensitive are able to detect those cells with varroa mites and remove them. These are some of the genetics we are breeding for in our own Colorado queen honey bee breeding program.
2014 will be a challenging year for all. We’re seeing higher honey prices for the year due to fewer beekeepers able to make a honey crop in addition to increased colony losses throughout the US this winter. This year is also showing greater demand and interest in beekeeping thus driving the costs for bee packages and nucleus colonies up. This makes having healthy hives and resistant queens heading these colonies even more valuable than in the past.
